Weight Loss Medication Q&A

What is weight loss medication?

Weight loss medications are prescriptions you receive to assist with weight management. Medications include sematglutide (Ozempic and Wegovy), Liraglutide (Victoza), orlistat, and/or some antidepressants. Excess body fat is associated with several long-term health issues, and losing weight may be necessary for you to manage weight-related conditions like high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. Losing weight can also lower your risk for chronic conditions.

Many of these medications work by suppressing your appetite. You feel less hungry throughout the day, making it easier to avoid binge eating and limit your overall calorie intake. Overeating and binge eating could be the issue when you attempt to lose weight on your own.

Losing weight can have many health and wellness benefits, including a healthier cardiovascular system, less joint pain, and lower blood sugar.

When is weight loss medication an option?

Weight loss medication isn’t the best choice for everyone who tries to lose weight, but it’s often recommended for people who can’t lose significant weight through diet changes and exercise alone.

Nikki might recommend weight loss medications if you have a body mass index (BMI) of over 30, or if you have a BMI of 27 or higher with weight-related conditions like hypertension or diabetes. She also makes sure that weight loss medications are safe for you according to your medical history and health goals.

What can I do to get results from weight loss medication?

As with other prescriptions, weight loss medications are most effective when you take them consistently and according to your provider’s instructions. Nikki follows up with you regularly to make sure you’re taking your medications correctly and that you don’t experience unanticipated side effects.

You can get ideal results from weight loss medications by following a personalized program that includes lifestyle changes alongside the medications. Nikki has many local connections and can refer you to a nutritionist to rebuild your diet or a counselor to help you alter your behaviors around eating.

With Nikki’s ongoing support, you can reach your weight management goals and maintain the results.
